CONECA Summer Seminar

ANA Summer Seminar

While not sponsored by CONECA, several of its members at one time or another, have over the years, acted as instructors for the class, The Modern Minting Process: Errors and Varieties.   This year's ANA Summer Seminar offers this course again and two other related courses on the subject!  The newest course, which also happens to be the first that will be offered this year, will be taught by CONECA past-president and 20th Century Die Variety Attributer, James Wiles, and Coppercoins.com founder, author and attributer, Charles Daughtrey.  The second class is also taught by James Wiles but for this class he will be assisted by current CONECA president, Mike Diamond. The instructor for the third class is Lane Brunner, Ph.D., author and collector.

Join your numismatic family for the 40th Annual ANA Summer Seminar, held on the campus of The Colorado College in beautiful Colorado Springs. Session I dates are Saturday, June 21, to Friday, June 27; session II, Saturday, June 28 to Friday, July 4, 2008.

The programs on the Minting Process and Error-Variety coinage are scheduled as follows:

Session 1: June 21-27

Ultimate Die Varieties: Learning to Attribute Lincoln Cents

This is a brand new class designed to develop future attributers by giving them access to the most respected researchers in the field and teaching them the techniques used to attribute all types of die varieties.  The first year will focus on Lincoln Cents, but following years will rotate through the various denominations.  So join us now to get in on the beginning and join us later for your specific series.

Learn how to attribute Lincoln Cent die varieties for yourself, by using the published materials and attribution techniques of two of the most renowned researchers in the series. The course covers the four major types of 20th century U.S. die varieties: design changes, mintmark styles, doubled dies, and repunched mintmarks. Discussions of each area include an explanation of origin, major identifying features, cataloging systems, and rarities for the “cherrypicker.” Two days of hands-on research make this course the ultimate die-variety learning experience!

Instructors: James Wiles, author of The Modern Minting Process and U.S. Minting Errors and Varieties: An ANA Correspondence Course; and Charles Daughtrey, author of Looking through Lincoln Cents: Chronology of a Series.

    Session 2: June 28-July 4

The Modern Minting Process: Errors and Varieties

If you are just beginning to enjoy the field of errors and varieties, this is the class for you!  All three areas of the minting process (planchet making, die making, striking) are examined in detail.  Advanced collectors can also find value in this class as a refresher course on the minting process and an update on the latest developments in the field.

Explore the minting process and learn how each procedure can lead to the creation of collectable minting errors and varieties. Class discussion and presentations focus on accurate identification and description, value, and the fine art of  “cherrypicking.” Students are encouraged to bring their own errors and varieties. (Note: This class fulfills the “Modern Minting Process and Errors and Varieties” course requirement in the ANA Numismatic Diploma Program.)

Instructors: James Wiles, author of The Modern Minting Process and U.S. Minting Errors and Varieties: An ANA Correspondence Course and Mike Diamond, current CONECA president.

Mini Seminar: Minting Misadventures: An Introduction to Collecting Error Coins. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Sunday and Monday, June 29-30.

Whether you are a seasoned collector or new to the hobby, examining and studying error coins is a great way to learn about the minting process and what can go right or wrong. This interactive mini-seminar explores how to get the most out of this fascinating and growing hobby specialty.

Instructor: Lane J. Brunner, Ph.D. Author and Collector
