CONECA At The
2008 Florida United Numismatists Show

(FUN '08)
by BJ "Robert" Neff

Once again, Florida rolled out its finest weather for this event providing warm, sunlit days and mild, almost summer-like nights. Yes, we did have a little rain, however, not enough to interfere with the show or dampen the enthusiasm of the very large attendance.
From the beginning, on Wednesday afternoon (dealers and early birds), everyone seemed abuzz with the rising prices of precious metals and those who specialized in bullion, gold and silver coins were ecstatic with the sales made during the following days of the show.

As for errors and varieties, the dealers in that area were more than pleased not only with their sales, but also the amount of people interested. Both Rich Schemmer and Fred Weinberg said the show was excellent. CONECA member Joe Gallo, who is more into the variety coins, also echoed the sentiments of Fred and Rich.

I was able to talk with J. T. Stanton, which is always a pleasure and quizzed him on the release date for the next new Cherrypickers' Guide. He is hopeful that it will hit the streets sometime in July of 2008. Bill Fivaz, who is resting up from an illness, did not make this show. Hopefully he will be able to make the next for he is always a welcome addition to any show that he attends.

After a somewhat long absence from the FUN shows, CONECA was able to man a table at this winter event. Mark Lighterman, Jeanie Neff and myself went about verbally attributing error and variety coins and in general, talking to people about our great organization. In the end, Jeanie was able to sign up eight new members including one YN and had three old members renew their dues. There were more than a few unusual coins that passed under the scope and one particular that I’ll do a separate article on. It is an excellent doubled die, newly discovered. We also held a blind raffle, with coins being donated by Mike Diamond, Joe Rizdy, Gene Nichols and myself. The end result was that we were able to add $126.00 dollars to the CONECA fund.  These last two FUN shows (summer and winter) validates our need to be at this type event. There are a lot of people out there who just do not know what they have and with our guidance and suggestions, they walk away from our table with some of the knowledge needed. Hopefully, we will be able to continue our presence at these events and be able to expand to other major shows.

To all those who stopped by and said hello, I want to thank you all. It was especially great to final met Gabe Alonso (discoverer of the 2004 Peace Nickel obverse doubled die) and CONECA member Jeff Ylitalo, one of the many brave soldiers who is still serving this great nation of ours.
For those of you who did not make it to this event this year, there is always 2009. I highly recommend this show not only for its quality and quantity of merchandize, but also for the shear educational opportunities that it provides. With the centennial of the Lincoln cent among other things next year, this extravaganza should be something special. Hope to see you there.

CONECA
At The Florida United Numismatists Convention

November 3, 2007 -- CONECA will be present at the next Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Show scheduled for January 10-13, 2008 and invites members and newcomers to stop by its table to chat and share their finds. CONECA members will be on hand to answer questions and aid collectors with verbal attributions of numismatic errors and varieties.

For those who renew or apply for new membership at this show, a special incentive will be included; a CD of "Master Hubs & Master Dies of the Lincoln Cent; 1909 to 2006" by BJ Neff. There will be a blind give-away of variety and error coins valued from a few dollars and up including a few approaching $100.00, so stop on by and try your luck.

FUN is host of the nation's largest coin show, held annually at the beginning of each year in Orlando, Florida. Over 15,000 collectors and dealers from around the country and world converge in the sunny, mild climate for the first bellwether gathering of the year.
