Doubled Die Medal Work Of
Jefferson Nickel Designer, Felix Schlag

by Ken Potter

Here you can see that there is actually tripling on the medal best seen on the serifs of the P of PAUL.

Nice doubling can be seen on PATRIOT / SILVERSMITH / GRAND MASTER

Felix Schlag's stylized designer initials, FOS, as found on much of his work is in sharp contrast to the simple FS found on the Jefferson nickel.

Nice doubling can be seen on the horse's forelegs.

Subject: Paul Revere medal struck by the Franklin Mint in 1967 for the International Fraternal Commemorative Society.

Mintage: The society issued a 50-piece set of 39 mm sterling silver medals honoring famous Freemasons in a limited edition of 1,293 sets. This one of them.

Comments: Contains an obverse doubled die that I would have completely missed it wasn’t for collector/researcher Dave Andreas who expressed an interest in any medals designed by Felix Oscar Schlag of Owosso, MI (1891-1974).  On his list of medals were two pieces that I had in stock including our subject coin. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t have given this medal a second look if it weren’t for Adreas pointing out the fact that Schlag had designed it.  Schlag is the designer of the Jefferson niclel.
