The Washington Quarter Dollar Book - Volume One: 1932-1941

The Washington Quarter Dollar Book
Volume One: 1932-1941

by James Wiles, Ph.D.

If you're not already collecting Washington quarter varieties, you will be once you see this book. Michael Ellis, Past President of CONECA, says, "When homage is paid to George Washington, it is usually done with flair, style, and completeness. This book is no exception."

The first in a series of detailed reference material for the Washington quarter, this great work is an absolute must for everyone from the specialist to the beginning collector. Virtually any question you can ask regarding the classification and attribution of a 1932-1941 Washington quarter variety is answered in this book.

Each variety is listed with its own Universal Variety Code, CONECA's Die Marriage Registry (DMR) number, doubled die and RPM numbers, and other cross-reference numbers for ease in accurate attribution. The nearly 1400 exquisite photographs are presented directly with the variety analysis, so that you can easily attribute your own Washington quarter varieties.

This is the first volume in CONECA's Washington quarter series. It contains the standard CONECA attribution guide features: mintmark styles, abbreviations, year and mintmark analysis, the lengthy variety analysis, and the brilliant "Master Checklist" - a practical hands-on tool for the collector. At the very end of the book, you'll find guidelines on how to submit coins to the CONECA Die Variety Attribution service as well as a convenient CONECA membership application.

The Official CONECA Handbook

The Official CONECA Handbook is approximately 150 -- 8-1/2 x 11 inch pages punched to fit into a loose leaf binder.  Much of what is in the handbook is now obsolete in terms of the CONECA then current administration, the Constitution and Bylaws and some of the programs that were current at the time.  Additionally, some of the more interesting articles in the handbook have been updated and included on the CONECA web site.

However, with that said, there is still a great deal of interesting reading in the handbook that many would benifit from.  To name a some: there are articles/features on wrong stock planchet error weights, the proofing process, bidding on coins at auction, coin storage tips, cleaning coins, mailing coins, what magnifier to use, U.S. coinage specifications, an illustrated chapter on the minting process, on illustrated chapter on "brief mint error descriptions," coin photography, etc.  All of these are subjects not yet placed on the web site that may be of interest.
